The global reproductive rights movement, which began in the 1960s, transformed the lives of hundreds of millions of women and men so that everyone could have the information and means they needed to make decisions about their bodies and their future. The main milestone of this trajectory was the International Conference on Development and Population (ICPD), held in Cairo in 1994, which represented a paradigm shift in the global approach to the themes of population and development. If previously, the goals to be achieved were exclusively demographic, after the conference the focus became the promotion of human rights, with an emphasis on the exercise of reproductive rights and the autonomy of individual choices. At the time, 179 governments pledged to guarantee access for all people to reproductive health care, especially voluntary family planning and safe pregnancy and childbirth services.
